Verité Launches Website on Human Trafficking Risk in Sub-Saharan African Supply Chains

Verité is pleased to announce the launch of a new web resource, www.verite.org/africa, to help users understand the risk of human trafficking associated with global supply chains operating in sub-Saharan Africa. The African region has acted as a supplier of labor and raw materials to the rest of the world for centuries, often under terms that have resulted in harm to African people and nations. Companies and governments have both an ethical and a legal responsibility to minimize the risks to human rights associated with global economic activity in Africa, including the risk of human trafficking.

Responsible Sourcing Tool Refresh

Verité is pleased to announce a new round of updates to the strawberries, bananas, pineapple, citrus, and melons commodity reports on the Responsible Sourcing Tool. These refreshed reports include the most recent information from the U.S. Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons Report and the U.S. Department of Labor’s List of Goods Produced by Forced Labor and Child Labor.

2017 TIP Report Tier Rankings Raise Concern

On June 27, the US Department of State released its annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. The TIP Report provides rankings and narrative assessments of the efforts of countries across the globe to combat and prevent human trafficking, forced labor, and other forms of modern slavery. Countries must improve their efforts to fight human trafficking to avoid the lowest ranking of Tier 3 and accompanying sanctions.

Upcoming Launch of Responsible Sourcing Tool Website in May

The Responsible Sourcing Tool is a new website created to help federal contractors and other companies, procurement officials, advocates, and consumers understand the risks of human trafficking in supply chains and the mechanisms to implement effective management systems to detect, prevent, and combat trafficking. The content was developed by Verité with the support and collaboration of the U.S. Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons in conjunction with other State Department and U.S. Government agency experts.
