The Cost of a Job

When we think of employment, we think of workers getting paid. But all over the world, Verité encounters vulnerable workers who have paid exorbitant amounts in order to get a job. Labor migrants from poor countries want jobs in richer ones. They see these jobs as the way they can get themselves and their families out of poverty. Too often they are instead subject to deception.

Jesus Ignacio Flores started working when he was 16, laboring long hours on construction sites and in the fields of his country's biggest sugar plantation. Three years ago his kidneys started to fail and flooded his body with toxins. He became too weak to work, wracked by cramps, headaches and vomiting. On Jan. 19 he died on the porch of his house. He was 51.
