Verité Symposiums and ConferencesChina SymposiumSince 1998, the Verité China Conference has allowed Verité to bring new issues to the attention of China-based factory managers and sourcing agents on a yearly basis. This program provides one day of intensive training for over 150 factory managers on labor law and code of conduct expectations, as well as practical advice on how to comply with both. Verité's China conferences have been held in various locations throughout the country, have provided participants with rare opportunities to meet with government officials and hear directly of the expectations of factories under Chinese law, in addition to learning how to establish the management systems needed for code of conduct compliance. For companies that have sponsored the event, Verité's China conferences have provided an excellent opportunity to help their suppliers understand clearly the demands and value of social and environmental compliance and to secure their cooperation in the process. Verité’s 2007 China Conference will take place on October 15th, 2007, in Shenzhen. To learn more or register, please visit here. To view Agenda please click here. Advancing Women in the Global Workplace SymposiumOn April 27th, 2007, Verité partnered with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) with support of the Calvert Group, Ltd. and other stakeholders to launch the Symposium, Advancing Women in the Global Workplace: Principles in Action. This program in New York City brought to light the business case and urgent need for empowering women, from the factory floor to the board room. The symposium featured a wide range of speakers and participants from corporations and social responsibility, civil society, and international organizations, who highlighted how empowering and advancing women can improve business performance and strengthen corporate social responsibility. The Symposium is an example of the types of multi-stakeholder initiatives that Verité undertakes as a result of our work with corporations and fieldwork in factories from China to Latin America. Whether on the factory floor or in the corporate boardroom, our findings confirm that improvements for workers in the workplace have far-reaching impacts that improve overall social and economic outcomes, both at the firm and in society in general. Such work shows us that it is imperative that businesses and stakeholders find ways to implement programs that are ethical, profitable, and sustainable.
