Labor Brokers & Foreign Contract Workers
There are more slaves today than in any other time in history and Verité is addressing the exploitive labor broker practices that lead to this abuse. A project, funded by Humanity United, will focus on how exploitive labor broker practices contribute to the forced labor of children in the garment sector of Tirupur, India; Filipino workers in the electronics sector of Malaysia and Taiwan; and Asian workers in the U.S. agricultural sector. The project will also seek to engage companies in implementing strategies to identify and eliminate exploitive labor broker practices from their supply chains in order to minimize the risk of forced labor.
We are excited to bring our research expertise to our headquarters country for the first time. Guest and immigrant labor are broadly scrutinized in the US yet there are many unanswered questions pertaining to freedom of movement, social responsibility and fair working conditions.
This new project complements Verité’s Department of Labor grant, which focuses on the use of forced labor in a variety of products in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to understand whether and how they are produced with forced labor.
